If you are pursuing a career as a computer science patent attorney, then you must first obtain a bachelors degree in a technology field that is recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. They will provide a complete list of options.

There are three categories when you are an applicant for the patent bar; A, B, or C. You fall under the A category if you have a bachelor’s degree in fields like biology, computer science, electronics technology, chemistry, pharmacology, physics, and others. The B or C applicants will have bachelor’s degrees in other fields. B and C applicants are judged on a case by case basis and their applications take a longer time to process for becoming a computer science patent attorney.

A registered patent agent does not need a law degree. This person will prepare, file, and process the patent applications. They will only do paperwork and are not qualified as a computer science patent attorney to give advice or help with any issues.

There is a list of classes that you will need to take in preparation for the exam to become a computer science patent attorney. You can study for those courses online and review patent bar exams online.

The requirements in addition to having a bachelors degree to apply for the patent bar exam include you being a citizen, an alien resident in good standing, or a foreigner in good standing. You must provide the application and many fees should be paid. You will take your computer science patent attorney exam at a Thomson Prometric testing center in person at any of the given locations anytime you feel you are ready for the exam.

Becoming a computer science patent attorney has several requirements. The most important thing is the bachelor’s degree in a computer science field. You can have a degree in a different field, but you might not be considered for applying.
